A key fob that stops working can be frustrating, but a failed remote does not automatically mean you need a complete replacement key. Battery condition, worn buttons, internal damage, loss of remote synchronisation and vehicle-side faults can produce similar symptoms. A quick diagnosis helps avoid replacing parts unnecessarily.
The Most Common Reasons a Key Fob Stops Working
1. Flat or Failing Battery
Key-fob battery life varies by vehicle, battery type and usage. Common warning signs include reduced range, intermittent operation or a low-key-battery message on the dashboard.
What to do: Check the correct battery type for your specific key before replacing it. Many remotes use common coin-cell batteries, but the size and installation method vary.
💡 If the remote still does not work after a battery change, do not immediately buy a new fob. Some vehicles may need the remote to be resynchronised, while others may have a separate key or vehicle fault.
2. Worn or Broken Buttons
Frequently used lock and unlock buttons can wear over time. A button that feels soft, only works when pressed at an angle or needs excessive pressure may have a damaged pad, switch or case.

3. Lost Remote Synchronisation

5. Temporary Radio Interference

Repair, Resynchronise or Replace?
