Smart Key Replacement Worthing, Keyless Fobs Coded at Your Car
Smart key replacement is a new keyless fob supplied and coded to your car, so it opens the doors and starts the engine from your pocket again. Worthing Auto Locksmith codes keyless entry and push button start fobs at the car, with or without a working key, and agrees the price on the call.
Smart Key Replacement in Worthing
A smart key, also called a proximity key or keyless fob, never goes into a lock or an ignition. The car senses it nearby, unlocks when you touch the handle and starts when you press the button. Replacing one means supplying a matching fob and coding it to the car so the car accepts it as its own. It is the keyless branch of car key replacement, and the most technical key most Worthing drivers carry.
Keyless Entry and Push Button Start Fobs
Some cars have keyless start only, where you still press a button on the fob to unlock. Others have full keyless entry as well, where the doors open by touch. The replacement fob has to match the system your car was built with, and the registration is enough to check which one it is.

Smart Key, Remote Key or Transponder Key
Three kinds of key look alike in the hand and work very differently. The one your car uses decides the job, the time and the cost.
| Transponder key | Remote key | Smart key | |
|---|---|---|---|
| How it opens the car | Turned in the door lock | A button press on the fob | Touch the handle with the fob nearby |
| How it starts the car | Turned in the ignition | Turned in the ignition | Press the start button |
| Chip inside | Yes | Yes | Yes |
| Battery needed | No | For the buttons only | For entry and start |
| Hidden metal blade | The key is the blade | Flip or fixed blade | Slide out emergency blade |
| Typical job | Cut and code | Cut, code and pair the remote | Code the fob to the keyless system |
If your car uses a button fob rather than a smart key, see replacement key fobs instead.
How a Smart Key Works
Mercedes-Benz brought the first smart key to market as Keyless Go on the S Class in 1998. The same idea is now used by almost every maker.
Proximity Sensing
Antennas in the door handles and the cabin send out a short range, low frequency signal. The fob wakes up, answers with its own code by radio, and the car unlocks only if the code matches one it has stored.
Push Button Start
Inside the car, the cabin antennas check the fob is inside and not just near the door. Only then does the immobiliser release and the start button work.
Why the Coding Matters
Because the car checks the fob every time, a new fob has to be added to the list of fobs the car trusts. A fob that is only cut and never coded will open the door with its blade and do nothing else.
Smart Key Systems by Make
Each maker gives its keyless system its own name. The name in your handbook tells you that the car uses a smart key, and which kind of fob to supply.
| Make | Name for the keyless system | Seen on |
|---|---|---|
| Mercedes-Benz | Keyless Go | Most models from the mid 2000s |
| BMW and Mini | Comfort Access | Optional on most models |
| Audi | Advanced Key | Optional on most models |
| Volkswagen, Skoda and Seat | Keyless Access, known to the trade as Kessy | Golf, Octavia, Leon and others |
| Ford | Keyless Entry and Keyless Start | Fiesta, Focus, Kuga, Puma |
| Nissan | Intelligent Key | Qashqai, Juke, Leaf |
| Toyota and Lexus | Smart Entry and Start | Yaris, Corolla, RAV4 |
| Renault | Hands free key card | Megane, Scenic, Clio |
| Kia and Hyundai | Smart Key | Sportage, Tucson, Niro |
Some makes have their own pages, Mercedes key replacement, BMW key replacement and Ford key replacement, and the rest are listed under the car makes we cover.
How a Smart Key Is Programmed
Proximity key programming uses diagnostic equipment plugged into the car to add the new fob to the keyless system and the immobiliser. It is the same kind of work as car key programming, with one more system to satisfy.
Adding a Smart Key When One Still Works
With a working fob, the new one is added alongside it. This is the quickest and cheapest route, and it is worth doing as a spare car key before the last fob goes.
Replacing a Smart Key When Every Key Is Lost
With no working fob, the car data is read to make and code a new one. On many newer keyless cars this is the hardest job a locksmith does, so the make, model and year are checked on the call before anyone sets off. The wider steps are covered under lost car keys.
Removing the Lost Fobs
A lost fob can still open a keyless car if someone finds it near the car. When fobs are lost or stolen, they are removed from the car at the same visit, which is the step described under a car immobiliser reset.
Smart Key Replacement Cost
Smart keys cost more than any other everyday car key, because the fob holds more electronics and the coding reaches two systems. These are typical UK figures.
| Job | Typical price |
|---|---|
| Keyless entry key replacement | About £280 |
| Keyless entry or smart key | £280 to £350 or more |
| Standard smart key replacement | £150 to £250 |
| Smart key for a high end car | £250 to £450 |
| Programming only | From £80 |
| Battery or small repair | From £30 |
| Smart key replacement, all makes | £150 to £400 |
| Dealer key, any type | £250 to £600 or more |
The price for your car is agreed in writing on the call, once the make, model, year and key situation are known.
What Drives the Cost of a Smart Key
Four things move the price of a smart key more than anything else.
The Make and Model
A keyless fob for a family hatchback costs far less than one for a premium car, and some of the newest systems are dealer only.
Whether a Fob Still Works
Adding a fob to a car that already has one costs less than an all keys lost job, which needs more time and more steps.
Keyless Entry or Start Only
A fob that handles entry and start carries more parts than one for push button start alone.
Time of the Call
A late night or weekend visit can cost more, and that is said on the call, not at the car.
The Emergency Blade and a Flat Fob Battery
Every smart key hides a small metal blade for the day the battery dies. Knowing where it is saves many call outs.
Opening the Door
A catch on the fob releases the blade. On many cars the driver door lock sits under a small cover at the end of the handle, which lifts off to reveal the lock. If the fob is inside a locked car rather than flat, the job is locked keys in car instead.
Starting With a Flat Fob
Hold the fob against the start button, or the spot the handbook marks, and press the button. A coil in the car powers the chip for just long enough to start.
Changing the Battery
Most smart keys use a coin cell such as a CR2032, reached by sliding out the blade and opening the case. A new battery is the first thing to try when the car stops finding the key.
Key Not Detected, Check These First
A key not detected warning does not always mean the fob needs replacing. These are the usual causes and what fixes each one.
| What you notice | Likely cause | What fixes it |
|---|---|---|
| Warning comes and goes, range getting shorter | Weak fob battery | A new coin cell |
| Fob fails only in some places | Radio interference nearby | Move the car or the fob away from the source |
| Fob stopped after a drop or getting wet | Damaged circuit or battery contact | A fob repair or a new fob |
| Buttons work but the car will not start | Fob no longer coded to the car | Coding the fob again |
| Nothing works, dash lights weak | Flat car battery | Charging or replacing the car battery |
| No fob works, not even the spare | Fault in the car, not the key | Diagnosis at the car before any key is made |
Used, Online and Aftermarket Smart Keys
Smart keys are sold cheaply online, and it is tempting to buy one and have it coded. It can work, but check before you buy.
Used Keys From Another Car
Many smart keys lock to the first car they are coded to, so a used key often cannot be coded to a second car. Some makes allow a key to be reset. Send the part number before buying.
Aftermarket Fobs
Copies of the original fob vary in quality, from range to battery life. A fob supplied for the job is checked against your car before the visit.
The Right Frequency and Part Number
A fob that looks right can be built for a different market or model year. The part number on the back of the original, or the registration, settles it.
Keeping a Smart Key Safe From Relay Theft
Relay theft uses two devices to pass the signal from a fob inside the house to the car on the drive, so the car opens and starts. In one European test of 237 keyless cars, 230 of them could be opened this way.
Sleep Mode Fobs
Some newer fobs from Audi, BMW, Ford and Volkswagen go to sleep when they stop moving. Some fobs sleep after a minute or two and others take 15 or even 30 minutes, so it is worth checking the handbook for yours.
Simple Steps at Home
Keep fobs away from the front door, store them in a signal blocking pouch, and check the handbook for a way to switch keyless entry off. A visible steering wheel lock adds another barrier.

Questions About Smart Key Replacement in Worthing
The questions asked most about smart keys, from cost and lost fobs to flat batteries.
How much does a smart key replacement cost in Worthing?
A standard smart key runs £150 to £250 with a specialist and about £280 for a keyless entry key, rising to £450 or more on high end cars. The price for your car is agreed on the call.
How do I start my car if the smart key battery is flat?
Hold the fob against the start button, or against the spot the handbook marks, and press the button. A coil in the car powers the chip for long enough to start.
My smart key is cracked but still works. Does it need replacing?
Often not. A worn case or broken button can usually be sorted with a key fob repair, which costs less than a new key.
How long does a smart key replacement take?
Around 30 minutes to an hour for most cars. Some keyless systems take longer, most of all when every key is lost.
What if I am stuck at night with no working smart key?
Call at any hour. Night call outs run under the 24 hour emergency auto locksmith service, with the price agreed on the call.
Can a smart key be replaced if I have lost every key?
On most cars, yes. A new fob is coded to the car and the lost fobs are removed so they can no longer open or start it. On a few newer models the key has to come from the dealer, and you are told that on the call.
Is a smart key the same as a key fob?
Not quite. Every smart key is a fob, but a plain remote fob only locks and unlocks when you press a button. A smart key is sensed by the car, so it opens and starts without leaving your pocket.
Does a smart key still have a chip?
Yes. Inside the fob is an immobiliser chip that the car checks before the engine runs, the same idea as the chip in the key covered under transponder key programming.
Can you code a smart key I bought online?
Sometimes. It depends on the make and whether the key has been used before. Send the listing or the part number before you buy, and it is checked first.
Do you replace smart keys across Worthing and West Sussex?
Yes. Smart keys are coded at the car across Worthing, Goring, Lancing, Shoreham-by-Sea and the rest of the 15 towns covered.
